@ Energy Efficiency in Gazi University's Engineering Faculty: Establishrnent of Burner-Heater Test and Calibration Laboratory Asa follow up of works carried out for Energy-Environment-lndustrial Rehabilitation, primarily on industry, conversion and housing sector, by METU ISILMARENResearch Genler (1980-1985) and by Gazi University's GEÇER Research Genler since 1986, energy efficiency, burner-heaterincinerator systems test and calibrations laboratories have been established in Heat-Power Laboratory of Gazi University'sMechanical Engineering Department. Through this State Planning Organization supported laboratory, it will be possible to executeResearch and Development, prototype production, product certification and calibration services required for energy planning, system design, production and operation in all sectors, specifically in industry, housing and conversion sectors, in EU standards, as well as other activities such as energy directors' training. in this study, contemporary energy efficiency approach and itstechnical, economic and environmental aspectsare discussed, theinfrastructure of the laboratory is introduced and the importance and functionality of the researches to be executed are examined. We talked to Titanic Port Hotel's Technical Service Manager, Olgun Kaya, about the energy efficiency. Kaya explained the methods implemented in thehotel for achieving energy efficiency. it is very important that energy efficiency and saving issues are taught in schools and are informed to the personnel in establishments through awareness raisingactivities. As the Energy Director of Titanic Hotels, 1 organized an "Energy Management" seminar for 400 personnel, explaining the importance of energy and the points tobe noted for in energy saving. 1 believe that such events are very beneficial. No matter how careful we design our systems, consumers' savings are very important. People's sensitivity towards energy efficiency isan important step forward that makes our job easier. The mixture then is ribbon or vane shaped, to be stored until required. Generally, the next step is to make the holes of the rings, in order to have them going through moulds which normally consist of metal pieces. The material inside the mould is vulcanized under controlled temperature and pressure. After removal of the molded ring, generally they need to be trimmed, or the burrs need to be removed. ina mould withmultiple sections, it may not be too easy to achieve close tolerances between the sections, that this cancause problems with the rings removed from the moulds. That can even cause high pressure and thermal strains in the mould . in order to overcome suchproblems, although injection molding can be seen as asolution, for rubber materials, thissolution is generally more expensive when compared to plastics, and generally not economical. Some resilient materials, specifically fleuroelastomers have higher rates of shrinking in the moulds. These differences reflect the tolerances for the rubbers, accepted by the standards. For example in BS 1806, the tolerance ofa medium sized O-ring of 3,53 mm cross-section diameter, is ± 0,1 mm. 190 Tesisat Dergisi Sayı 186 -Haziran 2011 !UlllK llı.cl Vanalarda Kullanılan O-~(!!!!!!: -~~-----_-_-_ ::~=---=-= =---- -......... _,... .,. __ ..,. .. ,.._ ., __ , .... __ -·---"'"' _____....,. ----·- -----.... ••ı~-....- ...... ..._ .______., ___..._ ~•ı,o_,.,.... __.,.,__ --·-- ... -- "'_,..,,,. ___ ,.., ...... - ...- ~-..---► --·-............ ___ ,. .. _ -... -....... - --·- -- ::-...:::.-:.o::.": ....,...._ __ ıoo•---·-- _.,.___ ----..-- ....... ---··- ,.. ___ .... _ ·-··-·---· gf§ Wf~~:.~~7.r.,,
